Chore charts by age: what's appropriate for toddlers to teens

The right chores change a lot between two and sixteen. Here is what to expect at each age, and how to keep the chart age-appropriate.

A chore chart that works at four will frustrate a fourteen-year-old, and a chart that works at fourteen will overwhelm a four-year-old. The chores need to match the child's real ability — and the chart needs to grow with them.

Toddlers (2–3)

Two or three simple, concrete tasks. The goal is the habit of finishing, not the number of chores. Celebrate every sticker.

Preschool (4–5)

Four or five tasks, kept visual. Preschoolers understand a weekly reward and can follow a short list with pictures.

School-age (6–11)

Real daily responsibilities plus a couple of weekly ones. This is the age where a chart can teach planning — a child can see the week ahead.

Teens (12+)

A handful of real responsibilities, chosen with the teen. The chart becomes a shared plan rather than a list of orders.
